European Concealed Hinge Screw Sizing: Why #6 x 5/8" Type 17 Is the Standard

If you've ever installed a European concealed hinge — the kind used in virtually every frameless cabinet built today — you've probably wondered whether the screw you're reaching for is actually the right one. The answer matters more than most woodworkers realize. The wrong screw can strip the cup hole, crack the hinge arm, or cause the door to sag over time. Here's what you need to know.

Why European Hinges Have Their Own Screw

European concealed hinges (also called cup hinges or 35mm hinges) mount into a shallow 35mm cup bored into the door, then attach to a mounting plate on the cabinet side panel. The hinge arm is typically 1.5–2mm thick steel, and the mounting holes are pre-drilled to a specific diameter. That geometry dictates the screw: you need a fastener that threads securely into ¾" sheet goods without blowing through the back face, and one whose head seats flush in the countersunk hinge hole without rocking.

The Standard: #6 x 5/8" Type 17 Flat Head

What Happens When You Use the Wrong Screw

Using a longer screw (like a 3/4" or 1") risks blowing through a ¾" panel — especially in MDF, which has almost no resistance once the screw tip exits. Using a coarser thread designed for softwood can strip out the hole in dense melamine-coated particleboard. And using a pan head instead of a flat head leaves the hinge rocking on the screw head, making fine adjustment impossible.

Installation Tips for Production Cabinet Shops

  • Set your driver torque carefully. European hinge screws are small. Over-driving strips the hole in particleboard instantly. Use a clutch-style driver set to the lowest torque that fully seats the head.
  • Use a #2 Phillips bit — or better, a square drive. Phillips bits cam out under torque. A square drive bit stays engaged and gives you better feel for when the screw is seated.
  • Don't pre-drill in plywood or MDF. The Type 17 point is designed to self-start. Pre-drilling removes material the thread needs to grip.
  • Keep screws consistent across a job. Mixing screw lengths or head styles on the same hinge type causes inconsistent door alignment that's maddening to adjust out.
